When we come face to face with the story of someone's martyrdom, it is tempting to make much of the person who dies. After all, Stephen was clearly a godly man with many admirable traits. But as we come to this passage this week, it is not Stephen but Stephen's Lord whom we are pointed to.

The trials we experience are often compared to a storm, and with good reason. Storms can be dangerous and deadly, and they are always completely out of our control. This is even more true of a storm at sea: the wind and waves crash against the side of the boat, tossing the passengers back and forth above the watery depths. This Sunday, we'll look at Jonah caught in the storm and learn what his storm has to teach us about the struggles and pain of our own lives.

Perspective is important. Whether it's sports replays or news pundits, we're prone to miss things when we only get one angle. In our text this week, we see the gospel from a different perspective than we're used to, an incredibly important perspective: God's own.
