As we approach Advent, I want to share a quote from C.S. Lewis to prepare our hearts and minds. Lewis once wrote, “Enemy-occupied territory—that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful King has landed… and is calling us all to take part in a great campaign of sabotage.”
Leave it to Lewis to cast Advent in a different light—not only as the story of our rightful King landing, but as the beginning of a mission in which that King calls us to participate.
So I want to challenge you, as we enter this season of Advent, to put a pause on all your planning and the flurry of activity in your heart and mind. As you pause, turn your attention to the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to bring Christ to bear on your soul in such a way that He slows you down to contemplate the glory of the Incarnation - the King who has come. And ask Him as well to make you freshly aware not only of His momentous love for you, but also of the mission He invites you to join.

It’s no surprise that this sermon is followed by the most physically brutal attack, ending with the death of Stephen, the first martyr of the church. At times God’s Word puts an emphasis on passivity. We are told that we cannot work or earn God’s merit or salvation. Jesus tells us to find rest for our souls in Him. But other times, God calls us to rise up, to bring great effort, and to get to work, to do good works. In Sunday’s sermon God’s Word tells us to both stop working and to start working.
Guest preacher, Rev. Chad Brewer grew up along the Pennsylvania-Maryland border and came to faith in college through a campus ministry at Shippensburg University in PA. After college, Chad attended and graduated from Covenant Seminary in St. Louis where he was introduced to Reformed theology and RUF. After seminary, he took over an existing RUF at the University of Missouri. After his time at Mizzou, Chad went on to start the RUFs at Penn State University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of California, Irvine. In 2019, Chad became the Assistant Coordinator of RUF, directing the ministries of RUF-International (ministry to international students in the US) and RUF-Global (ministry to college students in universities around the world). Chad lives with his wife, Christie, and three daughters in Southern California.
