The Gospel According to Abraham
"Justification is an act of God's free grace, wherein he pardons all our sins, and accepts us as righteous in his sight, only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us, and received by faith alone." (The Westminster Shorter Catechism)
The above words, found in the Westminster Shorter Catechism, summarize the truth that Paul defends in Romans 4 as he refers to the Old Testament patriarch Abraham as one who was justified by faith. If we fail to grasp Paul's teaching in this chapter, we do not know the gospel. If we do not know the gospel, we are yet in our sin and under God's righteous judgment. On this Palm Sunday, Paul's words regarding justification remind us that Christ, in his death, took our sin upon himself so that we, by faith, might have his righteousness. There is no greater news for sinners!
