What is worship like at Westminster?
Worship at Westminster is described as a dialogue between God
and us. He speaks His promises and truths to us through creeds, psalms,
hymns, choruses, prayers, scriptures, and the proclamation of the
Gospel and we respond. We are careful to acknowlege that some of our
worship hymns and choruses are proclamations and praises, some are
prayers, and others are mandates to spread the gospel to a hurting
and needy world. All, however, are cross and gospel-centered.
We refer to our services as truly blended, including the way we dress,
the makeup of our congregation, and the way we worship. In some services,
one may find traditional hymns accompanied by piano, stringed and
wind instruments and/or the pipe organ; these may be back-to-back
with choruses or re-written hymns of the faith. In other services,
one may find choruses, creeds, and psalm readings along with traditional
hymns that are accompanied with new arrangements by our worship band.
Finally, another service may include one of our choirs singing with
the praise team and band or alone with the orchestra. All that said,
we've even had services that incorporated all of the above.
We are careful, however, not to look at such as a circus, a show,
or any kind of performance...rather many diverse offerings unto the
Lord. The texts are given priority and may be intellectual as well
as reflective in nature...to engage the mind as well as the heart.
The messages are equally thought-provoking, giving historical data
as well as scripture-based and practical application. With the spoken
word and our music, we focus on our deep need for a Savior, our justification
found in Him, and our looking to Him in faith unto sanctification.
The Worship Ministry
Praise Team and Band: excellent musical and spiritual leadership for
rehearsals and services at Westminster. Focus is on the worship of
God and not performance. leading people to His throne and facilitaion
of worship is paramount. Positions include drums, percussion, bass,
piano, keyboards, sax, celtic violin and flute, guitar, vocals, sound
and media techs.
- Worship Choir: our adult choir is strong and rotates 71 members
thoughout the seasons. the choir is fully functional during holiday
seasons, sings with the Gainesville symphony for our Christmas
and Easter celebrations, and leads in other special services throughout
the year. Worship leadership and an emphasis on community are
paramount.
- Orchestral Ensemble: leads in worship on select occasions. Includes
strings, winds, brass, and percussion.
- Childrens Choirs: focus is on teaching the children elements
of our worship services, how to effectively lead in worship with
their music, and opportunities to lead. An annual worship musical
is written in-house and gives the kids a chance to sing accompanied
by the worship band.
- Youth Praise Team and Band: leads on occasion in worship and
rotates members in with the regular praise team for Sundays at
Westminster.
- Drama: several talented individuals are active in the presentation
of dramatic elements, whether in special services, regular services,
or even to make an announcement come alive with wit and humor.
- Media: film clips, powerpoint, graphics, print, and lighting.
