1. Scripture alone is our final authority in all things, and especially
in the matters of worship. The traditions of men must continually
be evaluated in light of what God has said. When a choice between
tradition and Scripture is to be made we will choose the dictates
of Scripture.
2. We will include Scripturally prescribed elements in worship that
express the transcendence and the eminence of God. This will include
reading and proclaiming the Word, singing praise to God, praying,
giving of thanks, giving of tithes and offerings, and confessing our
faith. All words and lyrics used in songs, prayers, liturgies, and
other corporate readings are to reflect sound Scriptural teaching
and theology.
3. We are a connectional church, with ties to the church universal.
Therefore, we will also continue to sing and confess our faith in
ways that have been historically used by God's people in worship.
We are also connected to our brothers and sisters in Christ from all
nations and tongues. Therefore, we will also seek to incorporate music
and expression from various cultures that the gospel has touched.
4. We affirm that there is biblical warrant for offering praise and
worship to God with music, both vocal and instrumental. Therefore,
we will encourage the use of all Scriptural musical instruments, biblical
expressions, and postures of public worship.
5. Worship, by definition, is a verb. Therefore it is to be participatory,
involving the entire congregation. We will seek ways to utilize the
many gifts in our worshipping community in public worship and will
pursue excellence in all areas of worship, including planning, preparation,
rehearsal, and presentation.
6. Worship is not a program that is presented to the congregation
by 'professionals,' but is an act of devotion from the congregation
to God. Musicians and singers are not commissioned to perform for
the people but are to have as their goal to help the people sing to
God and worship Him in Spirit and truth with mind, heart, and will.
7. God is the audience and receiver of our worship. Therefore, we
will not only sing songs about God, but we will sing songs of praise
and adoration to God. All musicians, singers, and worship leaders
must continually be trained and encouraged to see their main job as
facilitating the congregation's worship of God.
